Mobile apps - the most interesting statistics about their use

Have you ever thought about what your life would look like without mobile apps? Hard to say, given that we use our mobile phone almost anywhere: at home, at work, on travel. They help us organize our time more easily, socialize, inform ourselves and even monitor health or other processes in our daily lives. Statistics show that 90% of the time spent on the phone is spent on mobile applications.

A mobile application is a computer program or software application created to run on a mobile device: a phone, tablet or smartwatch. There are currently around 3 billion smartphone users worldwide and tablet users are almost 1,5 billion. This means that the mobile application industry is constantly developing.

The most interesting statistics on the use of mobile applications.

  • Apple Store currently has over 2.2 million apps available while Google play has more than 2.8 million.
  • A smartphone user uses 30 apps each month.
  • 75% of apps are used only once and then uninstalled.
  • 49% of users open an app at least 11 times a day
  • 57% of digital content is consumed using mobile devices.
  • 47% of retail purchases are placed on the phone.
  • 40% of all news is consumed via mobile phones.

Global statistics also show that the time spent by a user on the phone is between 2 hours and 15 hours a day. On average, 60 to 90 apps are installed on each phone. However, over the course of a month, 96% of the time spent on your phone is limited to a maximum of 10 apps.

The most used mobile apps worldwide are: Amazon, Gmail, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, YouTube, Google Maps, Google Search, WhatsApp.  Most people download free apps. That’s why 98% of global mobile app revenue comes from using free apps.

App Store or Google play?
A simple comparison between Android and iOS systems shows that the number of Apple device users who are willing to pay for apps is higher than for other devices.

The most popular categories in the App Store depending on the number of downloads are: games, business, education, lifestyle or entertainment. In the case of Google play, the ranking looks like this: tools, communication, video players, travel, social media and productivity. There is a big difference between the number of downloads in Google play and the App Store, this is also determined by the large number of Android devices compared to iOS. Moreover, the strictness imposed by Apple makes a much smaller number of apps reach the Store, which is not the case with Google play.
